Pelaihari, S Kalimantan (ANTARA) - Jony Pink, a craftman of cobek (mortar) he and his made from waste of ironwood, in Kandangan Lama Village, Tanah Laut District, South Kalimantan, said they really need local government help to market the crafts and to help them with handicraft tools.
"We really hope the local government will help us in marketing and tools to smooth the making of cobek craft from ulin (ironwood),"Joni Pink said, when he was met at his home, Wednesday (Dec 25, 2019).
According to Joni, he and his father have been making cobek from ulin for three years. "Instead of being disposed or made into charcoal, better to make it as more valueable things," he said.
The function of cobek (also known in Indonesia as ulekan) is just like blender today. It a place to mix all ingredients to be a single complete spice by using hand instead of electricity.
Joni and his father need two or three hours to make one cobek. So in one day they can produce tens of cobeks.

"At this time we make cobek just to meet orders, while marketing is still not available. We hope there is a place that accomodate our products," he said.
The price of ironwood cobek depens of the size, it ranging from Rp90 thousand to Rp130 thousand.
"The advantages if compared to other wood materials, ironwood mortar cannot overgrown with fungus," he said.
