Martapura, South Kalimantan 21/12 (AntaranewsKalsel) - Farmers in Antasan Senor, Banjar District, hunting mice, destructive pests which affecting agricultural production in the village.
Chairman of Harapan Bersama Farmers Group in Antasan Senor Village Zaini here on Wednesday said mice mass hunts is to suppress the population of rats in the rice fields.
"The hunt is done now to suppress the rat population, so they will be decreased when planting season and do not damage rice seeds to be planted," he said.
The rodent hunting is an activity to support government programs that Banjar district becomes food self-sufficiency, primarily for its own area.
The once a year mice hunt also involves farmers and society, so they can better control pests in the agricultural area.
"But the hunt this year encountered problems, because of high volume of water the fields. In contrast in dry season, farmers do much to hunt," said Zaini.
A farmer, Ideham, said the hunt for two hours caught dozens of rats which were immediately killed.
"I managed to catch 27 rats and those who catch the mice will be paid Rp500 per animal as encouragement to participate," he said.
