Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan 30/1 (AntaranewsKalsel) - Martapura River in Banjarmasin again invaded by garbage. Many piled up under the bridge, closing mostly the flow of river transportation.
"Tens of tons of garbage mixed with water hyacinth, twigs and logs every day coming to our area, because we are in downstream part," said Head of Public Works (PU) Agency Gusti Ridwan Sofyan at City Hall on Monday.
To overcome and not to let the garbage piled up even bigger to paralyze water transportation, said Ridwan, PU had deployed the garbage cleaner ship or broomship.
"Every day the broomship can catch about ten tonnes of waste in the river. Otherwise it could quickly pile up tens of tons," he explained.
He said the severe enough garbage accumulating are under three bridges, namely the Pasar Lama Bridge, Dewi Bridge, and Pangeran Antasari Bridge. The agency must put cleaning attendants to be alerted overthere.
"We deploy all power to dispels and clearing rubbish from the river. This is due to the swift tide of the upstream due to rain pretty heavy these days," he said.
Ridwan said the habit of Banjarmasin river got a shipment of garbage from the river upstream is inevitable, before there is a common commitment to cope with.
"There should be cooperation from the upstream area how to cope with a large garbage not to go down to the river. If not, it's going to happen again like this," he said.
