Kotabaru, South Kalimantan (ANTARA) - The Kotabaru Legislative Council (DPRD) appreciated the quick work of the local government in anticipating the flood in the district known by its nickname "Bumi Saijaan."
"The normalization of the river basin (DAS) was a real action taken by the regional government that we should appreciate," said Chairman of Kotabaru DPRD Syairi Mukhlis in Batulicin, Wednesday.
He also expressed his pride to the related government agency (SKPD) who had deployed its team to the field to conduct dredging of the river which is beginning to shallow.
He opined that to let the river function optimal a coooperation is needed between the government and people who live near the river not to build buildings on the riverbanks.
The buildings on the riverside will block the flow of the river and this will cause flooding to easily occur in rainy season.
Related to the buildings that are still standing on the riverbank, Syairi reminded the government working units (SKPD) to immediately relocate them.
According to him, river maintenance will be optimal if there are no buldings on the banks of the river.
"The result of (our) meeting, DPRD suggested the regional government through related agency (SKPD) to sterilize buldings that are considered to be hampering the function of the river," he pointed out.
