Banjarmasin, S Kalimantan (ANTARA) - The city government of Banjarmasin set to require every resident to provide two trash bins at their houses, one for organic waste an the other for nonorganic.
Head of Cleaning and Waste Management of Banjarmasin Environment Agency Marzuki here on Thursday (Dec 12, 2019) said the program will take effect in 2020.
"Next year we will intensify it socialization," he said.
The program of sorting organic and nonorganic waste have previously been applied to restaurants and hotels and it was successful enough that waste dumped to the Basirih landfill has reduced.
Now the city government set to apply it to households which shared 80 percent of about 600 tons of garbage the city produces everyday.
At the initial stage, the city government does not apply sanctions. Jack (nickname for Marzuki) said, residents are appealed to be aware of the important of sorting organic and nonorganic garbage.
"If we apply sanction, it will not educate," he pointed out.
According to him, there should be responsibility in every household to help the managing of garbage. Whereas the garbage is their own production, and they only asked to help sorting it.
Thus, the waste from their house when disposed to temporary disposal (TPS) or integrated waste disposal (TPST) has already been sorted between wet garbage bag (organic) and dry garbage bag (nonorganic).
"Even scavengers will soon know which bag of recycle garbage, and they don't need to spill every garbage bag," he said about the benefit.

Thus waste from organic, such leftovers or vegetable, could directly be processed into organic fertilizer, while nonorganic waste such as plastic, paper, drink bottle, can be used again.
According to him, if only the program of two garbage bags runs, 20 percent at least, it will be meaningful in managing garbage in the city.
"In fact, we will make one or two points later as pilot areas so we can motivate others," he said.
