Banjarmasin, S Kalimantan (AntaranewsKalsel) - Pulau Laut area is one of the richest areas of marine tourism destinations. One of them is the beach located in Teluk Tamiang (Tamiang Bay) Village, Tanjung Selayar Sub-District (Pulau Laut Barat), Kotabaru.
Head of Teluk Tamiang Village Burrohim revealed Teluk Tamiang beach has a rich underwater coral reefs. But it is also rich in the fishery sector, and has the potential to develop seaweed cultivation.
Tamiang Bay is one of the areas included in Kotabaru Marine Protected Areas (DPL). With this status, the government regulates the way of fishing here. Fishermen are prohibited from using explosives as well as toxins to protect coral reefs.
However, in recent years, several coastal points in Teluk Tamiang Village have been polluted by coal waste in Mekar Putih area.
Burrohim revealed, never again found lobsters on the beach. "Still remember, fishermen formerly did not bother to get lobster because it is easily obtained on the beach," he said.
Burrohim is worried about pollution of coal waste from the terminal damaging coral reefs. "It's often the residents working together to clean up coal waste, already tons of coal waste that we collect," he explained.
He requested that this issue be resolved to save the ecosystems in the area, especially coral reefs that serve as life support for various types of living things that exist around it.
"Coral reefs provide shelter, feeding, and breeding for a variety of marine biota and coral reef damage will directly affect the survival and sustainability of various marine animals and plants," he concluded.
