Banjarmasin, S Kalimatan (ANTARA) - The City Government of Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan, is intensifying socialization of organic waste processing into compost as an effort to overcome waste emergency.
Head of Banjarmasin Communication, Informatics and Statistics Office Windiasti Kartika here on Friday said that her office task right now is to spread information and socialization to the community in effective waste management from the source.

One of which, she said, by utilizing organic waste to be processed into compost or fertilizer so as not to be disposed of in landfill and not to worsen accumulation of waste in the city.
Windi reminded that the city must accept the sanction of closing the Basirih landfill by the Environment Ministry since February 1, 2025. As a result, waste is not optimally managed, a lot of waste piles up in the corners of the city.
Banjarmasin produces an average of 600 tons garbage per day, but the quota for disposal to the Banjarbakula regional landfill in Banjarbaru City is only 105 tons.
"Imagine, where the remaining 500 tons be disposed and now waste is piling up, smelly, and spreading diseases. But this must be a shock therapy, not a reason to give up," saidWindi.
Everyone, she said, must unite to handle this emergency waste problem, including all doing independent sorting from home, which is organic and non-organic waste.
"Organic waste such as from leftover food, fruit or vegetables can be made into compost, so we can minimizedisposal to final disposal," she explained.
