Banjarmasin, S Kalimatan (ANTARA) - The South Kalimantan Forstry Office (Dishut Kalsel) has taken several strategic measures to reduce greenhouse gas emission.
Head of the office Fatimatuzzahra expounded various emission reduction schemes and critical land restoration in the province.
“Previously, we only get glimses of information about emissions and offset schemes from news and regulation. Today, we together with the Environment Ministry, Forestry Ministry, speakers from Warsi, and ITB experts provide a detail understanding of schemes can be applied, including administration, safeguard data, and proposal documents must be prepared,” she said in Banjarbaru, Monday.
She explained that emissions reduction efforts in South Kalimantan are being carried out through comprehensive approach.

“We are not only planting trees, but also reducing forest encroachment and minimizing the potential for forest and land fires (karhutla). These two things are crucial in maintaining the sustainability of land cover,” she said.
According to a release from the Ministry of Forestry, land cover in South Kalimantan is showing a positive trend.
“In 2020, forest cover was recorded at 904,436 hectares and increasing to 945,352 hectares in 2024. These satelite imagery figures do not reflect 1–4 year aged plants. Land cover in the field is better,” she said.

Fatimatuzzahra revealed a major plan of planting on November 27, 2025 by using REDD+ funds.
“Of the total 250 hectares of land owned by the provincial government, 100 hectares will be planted. This area is divided into four zones: two zones of productive fruit (MPTS), 30 hectares for ulin or ironwood plantation, and 20 hectares for eucalyptus. We will have an expanse of ulin in one area,” she said.
She also informed that the planting will be carried out by local forest farmers and the management to be handled by the provincial government.

"Inspection roads are also being prepared as maintenance routes and fences to protect the area," she said.
With these various efforts, the South Kalimantan Forestry Office affirms its commitment to implementing the Governor's directive to restore critical land, increase carbon stocks, and strengthen environmental resilience in South Kalimantan.
