Kotabaru, South Kalimantan (ANTARA) - Gold mining company PT Pelasart Tambang Kencana (PTK) trains villagers to cultivate maggots as an effort to overcome waste problems in Sungai Durian Sub-district, Kotabaru, South Kalimantan.
"The training held from November 22 to 24, 2024 is to utilize waste, so it has economic value for local residents," said PT Pelsart Tambang Kencana CSR Manager Septamto in Banian, Saturday.
He said this is a company's concern in handling environmental problems, especially household or domestic waste.
The training participants were representatives from four villages, Buluh Kuning, Gendang Timburu, Batuah, and Sengayam, as well as fisheries, animal farm and MSME business actors in Sungai Durian and Pamukan Barat sub-districts.
"This company's CSR program is part of effort to increase local people's skill to increase their families economy," he said.

The training held by the company by bringing in a team of experts is expected to provide knowledge for residents and MSMEs and to minimize rubbish around.
Mulyanto Dihajo, a resource person from oglo Larva Center Jati Asih said apart from handling waste problems, maggot also have ecnomic value. Maggots can be used as animal feed, while its waste and feces can be used as fertilizer in the form of compost,
"Maggot can also be process into snack after being process in the oven, and also as cosmetic ingredient," said Mulyanto.
Maggot cultivation is said to be not difficult, considering maggot reproduce naturally in nature, so it is easy to find them.
Head of Sungai Durian Sub-district Raden Rahmat Mada said that garbage has become a problem in Sungai Durian, because there is no final disposal. As a result, people throw rubbish into rivers or on empty land.
"Hopefully with this training for residents can reduce waste and waste can be converted into economic value," he said.
