Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) admitted to being shocked and saddened by the shooting at the former President of the United States Donald Trump when he was giving a speech in Pennsylvania on Saturday (July 13) local time.
"I am feeling shocked and saddened by the shooting that targets former President Donald Trump today," he stated in a post uploaded on his X account @jokowi, as cited in Jakarta on Sunday.
Jokowi emphasized that every act of violence is at odds with the democratic values that people around the globe adhere to.
The Indonesian head of state then expressed hope for the recovery of Trump, who is running for re-election in the 2024 US Presidential Election that will take place in November.
"I am wishing him a recovery, and my prayers are with everyone affected by this incident," he stated.
Gunfire rang out while Trump was delivering a speech during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, forcing him to stop his speech and vacate the podium with a bleeding, according to local media.
The speech Trump delivered to his supporters in Butler City on Saturday (July 13) lasted only a couple of minutes. The former US president abruptly stopped his remarks when addressing illegal migration.
Following the incident, Trump's spokesperson, Steven Cheung, assured that the former US president "was doing well," adding that Trump was being treated at a local medical facility.
In a statement released on Sunday, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) identified Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, a resident of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, as the suspect in the attempted assassination.
