Jakarta (ANTARA) - Director of the Marine Ecology Division of the Korean Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Jae-Young Lee expressed the hope that Indonesia and Korea would share knowledge regarding blue carbon and enhance further cooperation in the future.
He expressed his hopes related to the Indonesian Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment and the South Korean Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries held a hybrid seminar to explore cooperation on tapping the blue carbon potential of the two countries.
The Korea-Indonesia Blue Carbon Expert Seminar was held as a form of commitment between the two countries on developing the blue carbon international cooperation activity, which was agreed upon during a bilateral meeting between the two ministries on October 13, 2021.
The two ministries have held several meetings to follow up on the cooperation in the maritime sector.
"The Korea-Indonesia Blue Carbon Expert Seminar is a manifestation of the activities agreed upon in the blue carbon cooperation. On this occasion, the best experts from Korea and Indonesia have gathered to map and discuss the two countries' needs," deputy for environmental and forestry management of the Maritime Affairs and Investment Coordinating Ministry, Nani Hendiarti, said in a written statement received here on Wednesday.
Indonesia and South Korea share a strong relationship, as shown by the number of cooperations that have been established in strategic sectors, including the maritime sector, she added.
Currently, the two ministries are exploring cooperation in the blue carbon, marine garbage, and aquaculture sectors.
"Indonesia and Korea have great blue carbon potential and this collaboration can increase and strengthen our natural resources, and contribute globally to reducing emissions," she remarked.
Director of the Korea-Indonesia Marine Technology Cooperation Research Center (MTCRC), Hansan Park, said that currently, the center is trying to reduce carbon emissions by 40 percent by 2030.
"I hope that the cooperation between the two countries will continue to play a major role in maritime-based cooperation to resolve global climate problems and be able to develop more specific cooperation activities in the future," he emphasized.
