Amuntai, S Kalimantan (Antaranews Kalsel) - The District Hospital of Pambalah Batung Amuntai in North Hulu Sungai, South Kalimantan, is still waiting for the permit process to manage medical waste using an incinerator.
Online, said Head of Information, Promotion and Customer Service of the hospital H. John Martin Sukandri, the hospital was declared to have registered with the Ministry of Environment. However, some conditions still need to be completed.
"We have added the height of the chimney from the combustion of solid medical waste as required, as well as sending waste or residue from combustion to Java through shipping services or transporters," said John in Amuntai, Thursday.
Meanwhile, for the disposal of liquid waste, said John, such as the remaining blood, toilet wastewater and others are carried out through licensed Waste Treatment Plants (WWTPs).
"We provide temporary shelters of processing liquid waste. There we place fish to know whether the liquid medical waste is harmful to living things before being discharged into the river," he explained.
Although in some modern hospitals the results of liquid waste processing are even reused, but the Pambalah Batung Hospital does not implement it.
John, who was accompanied by Environmental Health Officer Saidillah and IPL (WWTP) staff Fitriani, explained that in addition to processing medical waste through IPAL and incinerator, a Temporary Disposal Site for Hazardous Toxic Materials (TPS B3) is also available.
Every two times a year the hospital sends water samples from waste treatment through WWTP to the South Kalimantan Health Laboratory in Banjarbaru.
John added that the Pambalah Batung Hospital won a five-star Plenary Accreditation from the Hospital Accreditation Agency in 2018 and the medical waste management system in the hospital had been approved.
