Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing has mobilized personnel and heavy equipment as part of the disaster response to the 5.6-magnitude earthquake in Cianjur district, West Java, on Monday.
"We are mobilizing personnel and heavy equipment from the nearest area (approximately 10 kilometers) to remove fallen trees and landslide (material blocking) the national road," ministry spokesperson Endra S. Atmawidjaja informed here.
The deployment of personnel and equipment is aimed at restoring traffic on the Puncak-Cipanas-Cianjur national road, where a road section has been affected by the earthquake, he said.
"One of the locations that we received the damage report is on a road section connecting Cianjur to Puncak in Cugenang sub-district," he informed.
The ministry has received no reports of road damage caused by the earthquake due to structural failure, he said adding, all reported road issues have been related to obstructions caused by fallen trees or landslides.
"We will ready personnel and heavy equipment at the Cugenang location to anticipate aftershocks or more landslides," the official said.
Earlier, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BKMG) reported that a 5.6-magnitude earthquake jolted the southwestern part of Cianjur district, West Java, at 1:21 p.m. local time (UTC +7) on Monday.
According to the BMKG, the earthquake, whose epicenter was located 10 km underground southwest of Cianjur, was felt at V MMI (Modified Mercalli Intensity) in Cianjur, IV-V MMI in Garut and Sukabumi, and III MMI in Cimahi, Lembang, Bandung, Cikalong Wetan, Rangkasbitung, Bogor, and Bayah.
The tremor was felt at II-III MMI in Rancaekek, South Tangerang, Jakarta, and Depok. The agency said that the earthquake had no potential to cause a tsunami.
