The Provincial Government of South Kalimantan is now fighting to restore the international status of the Syamsudin Noor Banjarmasin Airport in Banjarbaru.

Acting Head of South Kalimantan Transportation Agency Agung Rahmadi together with Head of the province's Bureau for Executive Administration (Adpim) Berkatullah have visited the Indonesian Ministry of Transportation in Jakarta, in effort to recover the airport's international status.

Agung Rahmadi when confirmed in Banjarmasin, Wednesday, said that his agency is making effort to ask the ministry  that the Syamsudin Noor Airport could restore its its internnational route service, especially umroh.

"We are fighting for, as directed by the regional secretary, at least there will be a direct service, especially for umroh trips," said Agung.

He said the provincial government will cooperate with the airport authority PT Angkasa Pura and communicate to travel agents, so that Syamsudin Noor Airport could serve direct umroh flights to Saudi Arabia.

"What is clear is that we do not yet have direct services abroad," Agung pointed out.

Head of South Kalimantan Adpim Berkatullah expounded that the provincial government really hopes for the international status of Syamsudin Noor Airport, considering that South Kalimantan is currently intensively developing its tourism potential.

"South Kalimantan is now focus on developing Meratus Geopark tourism, thus the airport that directly serve international routes is really needed," said Berkatullah.

Previously, the Transportation Ministry revoked the international status of Syamsudin Noor Airport from April 2024, but the airport can still serve international flight for certain purpose on temporary basis, such as serving Hajj pilgrims.
