Farmers from the Karya Bersama group in Shabah Village, Tapin District, South Kalimantan, were able to produce 8.4 tonnes of shallots per hectare.

"Shallot is one of the agriculture commodities we proud of. Today is the first harvest in 2021. The market price is around Rp32 thousand," said Regent HM Arifin Arpan during a symbolic harvest Wednesday in Shabah Village, Bungur Sub-district.

"This harvest on four hectares land in Shabah Village, the productivity is very good. We have converted it with BPS the result is 8.4 tons per hectare," said Head of Tapin  Agriculture Agency Wagimin.

He said that in Tapin the total planting area for shallot is around 400 hectares. The potential areas are in the sub-districts of Bungur, Tapin Selatan, Binuang, and Hatungun.

"Chairman of the Indonesian Shallot Association Ferry from West Java, who has visited Tapin several times, saw that the quality of shallots in Tapin is not inferior to those in Java," he said.

As for the obstacles, the planting is still not optimal, some of which because the local farmers are still unable to process seeds, so they have to buy them every year.

"Besides, farmers are still dependent on assistance programs, because the capital for shallots is quite large. For one hectare it needs one ton of seeds. Let's say the cheapest is Rp25 thousand per kg, then on average seedling cost Rp47 million, not included fertilizers and land processing," he said.
