Kotabaru, (AntaranewsKalsel) - It has been several months for bagan (structure to catch fish) fishermen in Gedambaan Village, North Pulau Laut, Kotabaru, South Kalimantan, choosing to take a holiday and not dare to go to sea due to high wave conditions.
"The weather is uncertain, it is quiet for two days but a week is high again," said Basri, a fisherman in North Pulau Laut on Wednesday.
This condition has been going on since last April. High waves increase the risk for their boats to go to the bagan which is about two miles from the beach.
Seawater also becomes cloudy, thus blocking the light from the baganthrough the water to attract fish to gather.
"Fishermen cannot go to sea, so there is no income at all," he told.
It is estimated that the weather will be again friendly to fishermen around October. While unable to go to sea, many fishermen switch job to continue to support their families.
"Yes, become a casual daily laborer, like building work or breaking rocks," he added.
Another Gedambaan village fisherman, Basran, now takes wages every day to become a mountain rock breaker. Working from morning to evening, he is paid Rp100,000 to Rp160 thousand.
"Joining people, paid Rp100 thousand for three cubic, four cubic Rp120 thousand, five cubic Rp160 thousand," he said.
Sometimes he has to work two days to make money. This condition is different from his job as a fisherman which results are more tolerable.
"It's pretty good at sea, it depends on the fish, but if you can get it," he said.
