Banjarmasin, S Kalimatan (ANTARA) - The City Government of Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan, continues to revamp the Basirih landfill site into an integrated system.
Banjarmasin Mayor H Muhammad Yamin HR here on Friday said that a more modern waste management will be implemented with sanitary landfill.
He asked for prayers and support of all stakeholders, including all levels of society, to ensure maximum compliance with this management commitment through collective measures, particularly waste collecting at source and the reduction of single-use plastic waste.

"If given another opportunity by the central government, we reaffirm our commitment to never dump waste here again, unless it's managed and sorted. This is our key focus. We want Basirih to be built as a larger and representative site, with potential for TPST (Integrated Waste Processing Sites) in several zones," said the Mayor.
Yamin said he personally inspected the progress of removing the remaining waste that produces leachate at several locations at the landfill.
"Today, we are reviewing the condition of Basirih landfill, which is still being repaired. We are still in the rehabilitation phase, making improvements as mandated by regulation to use the sanitary landfill, no longer open dumping," he explained.

"Today the leachate drainage system is starting to improve. We have repaired it and checked the index is below the quality standard (limits for leachate contamination), meaning it's safe," he said.
The Basirih landfill was sanctioned to close by the Ministry of Environment since February 2025 due to open dumping.
Due to this sanction, the Banjarmasin City Government declared a waste emergency status. Daily waste production reaches 600 tons and only a portion can be disposed at the regional landfill in Banjarbaru.
