Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government is preparing a total of 36,660 transportation vehicles across various modes to facilitate the public during the Eid al-Fitr homecoming.
"We have prepared all facilities and infrastructure, including buses, ferries, planes, and trains," Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi said on Friday (March 6) evening.
The fleet consists of approximately 31,300 buses for land transportation, 841 ships and 254 ferries to support inter-island passenger mobility, 372 planes, and 3,893 train cars.
The ministry is also conducting roadworthiness inspections on all modes of transportation through several monitoring instruments such as ramp checks and surveillance on various modes of transportation.
These inspections are intended to ensure that all transportation vehicles used during the Eid al-Fitr holiday and return travel period are in proper operating condition.
Purwagandhi noted that roadworthiness inspections have been conducted since the 2025/2026 Christmas and New Year holiday season and will continue ahead of the Eid al-Fitr holiday on mid March.
Furthermore, the Indonesian government is also preparing a digital-based monitoring system for Eid al-Fitr holiday operations, integrated with various transportation hubs.
This monitoring covers various transportation facilities such as terminals, ports, airports, train stations, and ferry crossings that serve as points of public movement.
This digital system allows the government to monitor field conditions in real time and make quick decisions to handle congestion or operational disruptions.
Monitoring is carried out in collaboration with various stakeholders, including the Indonesian National Police Traffic Corps; the Ministry of Public Works; the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG); and the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas).
To support this monitoring, the ministry has integrated approximately 7,100 surveillance cameras and prepared aerial surveillance via approximately 60 drones placed at 80 strategic locations.
The ministry projects that passenger movements during the 2026 Eid al-Fitr homecoming will decrease by approximately 1.7 percent compared to the previous year, from 146.4 million people to approximately 143.9 million people.
The peak of the Eid homecoming flow is expected to occur on March 16 and 18, after the government proposed a work-from-anywhere (WFA) policy to help reduce the congestion of the homecoming flow, approved by President Prabowo Subianto.
For the return flow of Eid homecoming, the government has proposed the implementation of WFA on March 25-27, following the end of the collective leave period for Eid al-Fitr.
