Banjarmasin, S Kalimatan (ANTARA) - The City Government of Banjarmasin in coordination with the South Kalimantan Provincial Government is now overseeing imported thrift (used) cloth which are still thriving sold in markets in the city.
Head of Trading of the Banjarmasin Trade and Industry Service Rakhman said that his office is so far only monitoring the sale of the second-hand clothes, especially imported products.
“We carry out surveillance together with the provincial government, so there is no action like what happened in Jakarta,” he said.
There has not been, said Rakhman, a specific directive from the central government to take action against the sale of thrift clothes.
“Until today there has been no letter (ordering) to take action and curb imported second-hand clothes in the City of Banjarmasin,” he said.
While the regulation related to the ban on illegal imported used clothing has been regulated in the Minister of Trade Regulation (Permendag) Number 40 of 2022.
Some time ago, the central government has done contral and enforcement of imported used clothing products.
As many as 7,363 bundles of illegally imported second-hand clothes worth Rp80 billion (US$5.3 billion) were destroyed in Cikarang, West Java, on March 28, 2023.
Meanwhile, some of merchants of used clothes admitted that there is no such thing as a curb on the sale of thrift clothes in the city so far.
“We are still allowed to sale the products we have stocked, but we keep being watched, so we don't make a big order from out city,” said one of merchants who did not want his name to be mentioned.
