Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan (AntaranewsKalsel) - Acting Governor of South Kalimantan H Tarmizi Abdul Karim said the provincial government intends to build a water intake with a capacity of 1500 liters/second for the supply of raw water needs for the local population.
He revealed this when answering the Democratic Party faction of South Kalimantan Assembly (DPRD) on the general views on the draft regulation Irrigation plenary meeting led by Vice-Chairman H Hamsyuri in Banjarmasin on Thursday.
"According to the development plan the intake will be in the Riam Kanan reservoir area in Banjar district," he said as recited by General Affairs Assistant of the Provincial Secretariat Haris Karno.
The water intake will be as a pilot for the provision or fulfillment of raw water needs of society of "Banjarbakula". It is an acronym of Banjarmasin, Banjarbaru, Banjar, Barito Kuala and Tanah Laut.
Previously Democrats faction questioned whether irrigation management including fulfillment of the supply of raw water to local water company (PDAM) for clean water for local communities.
The problem is, according to the faction, the issue of supply of clean water is a major requirement for the community, especially during long dry season, so water has economic value.
While Riam Kanan irrigation reservoirs could not fully become a mainstay for the supply of clean water for taps, but also to fulfill other functions.
Because Riam Kanan dam, built in the 1970s, was designated for hydropower plant (PLTA) and the waste water usable for agricultural activities in the broad sense that includes fisheries, food crops and livestock.
