Martapura, S Kalimantan, July 26 (Antara) - The Housing and Settlement Office of Banjar District in South Kalimantan Province has developed the methane gas production from waste for various purposes.
Banjar District Head Sultan Khairul Saleh said here on Friday that he hoped his district to win an Adipura Kencana environmental award in 2014 because of its efforts to recycle waste to produce methane gas.
The methane gas utilization is also expected to help address the global warming impacts and improve the local community`s economy because they do not need to buy LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) any more, he said.
The local Housing and Settlement Office distributes the methane gas for free to 10 houses located around Padang Panjang landfill area, and uses the gas to generate electricity around the landfill area.
The characteristics of methane gas are different from that of LPG, because methane is odorless,d non-explosive and has lower charcoal acid gas level.
The utilization of methane gas was introduced during an event to celebrate the first anniversary of Banjar`s Housing and Settlement Office. ***4***
