The government through the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (LHK) offered social forestry to overcome agrarian conflict when the District Government of Central Hulu Sungai (HST) held a coordination meeting and discussion over the issue in Barabai, Friday (March 6, 2020).

Deputy Regent Berry Nahdian Forqan when he opened the meeting remarked that it is a commitment of the people and the government of HST to preserve and defend the sustainability of the Meratus Mountains, especially from exploitation from mining and palm oil plantation.

However, he acknowledged, the limited access and infrastructure is a challenge for the development of a sustainable Meratus. Thence, we must channel all potentials of customary people for mutual support and sustainable development.

Agraria conflict and mediation expert from the LHK Ministry Rivani Noor Machjoeri, who attended the coordination meeting, said the supervision and management of the area needed to involve all parties, government, private, and the community.

"The state must be present through all lines and levels of the government sector and must take a role, from ministries to sub-districts," he insisted.

The form of a solution offered can provide benefits to the parties. Currently, the management of forest areas is faced with conflicts.

"Social forestry is one solution to conflict resolution, not only the government, the private sector must also participate in conflict settlement," he said.
