People who live in remote areas on the Meratus Mountains have expressed their desirability to develop the quality of their human resources, a South Kalimantan legislator said.

"The desire was expressed when I was in recess," said Athailah Hasbi SH, a legislator from the constituency of South Kalimantan IV (covering districts of Tapin, South Hulu Sungai, and Central Hulu Sungai), here on Wednesday (Feb 26, 2020).

To realize to improve human resources, the Meratus remote community is now looking forward to the building of senior high school (SMA) or high vocational school (SMK) in the area of the Hantakan Sub-district, Central Hulu Sungai (HST).

There is no SMA or SMK here in Hantakan, and if local people want to continue their studies to high school they have to go at least ten kilometers.

The nearest SMK or vocational school is only in Pagat, the capital of Batu Benawa Sub-district, HST, which is about 10 kilometers away from Hantakan.

Responding to their wish, Athailah, who is also a member of Commission IV overseeing people's welfare, said he will make his effort to fight for it to the Provincial Government of South Kalimantan through his commission.

Hantakan (about 179 kilometers north of Banjarmasin) is a partition of the Batu Benawa Sub-district, whose government also nurtures the Remote Customary Group (KAT) of Dayak Meratus.

On the occasion of his recess (February 19 to 23, 2020), the Golkar faction member met his constituents in Hantakan, Batu Benawa, Pandawan, and Haruyan Sub-districts.

As a note in the effort of improving human resources in Bumi Murakata (HST's nickname), in early 1960 during the government of Governor Syarkawi, Barabai (165 kilometers north of Banjarmasin), the capital of HST, received the title of a student town.

While this history of South Kalimantan also noted, the governors of the province were mostly from the Bumi Murakata.
