Paringin, South Kalimantan (ANTARA) - Nurul Muhibbin Islamic Bording School in Halong Sub-district, Balangan District, South Kalimantan, have harvested edamame or Japanese soybeans as a result of assistance from Adaro Bangun Negeri Foundation (YABN) and the University of Lambung Mangkurat (ULM).
The abundant harvest of edamame was also a form of success for the students (santri) and management of the boarding school in the field of agriculture through the Adaro Santri Sejahtera Program (PASS) or Adaro's Prosperous Santri Program.
"Alhamdulillah (Thank God) the edamame harvest can add income to Islamic boarding school (pesantren)," said one of business managers at Nurul Muhibbin, Mukhlis.
It yielded about 150 kg of harvest. Edamame known as healthy food was sold at a reasonable high price of IDR25 thousand per kg.
The edamame farming business at Halong Islamic boarding school was the replication of the implementation of the Organic Agriculture Program that YABN had implemented in the District of Tabalong.
According to Rina Ermadeni, Coordinator of Adaro Nyalakan Budaya & Lestari concurrently PIC PASS, currently edamame is quite rare that make it selling price is quite high.
"Previously we succeeded in cultivating edamame in Kambitin Village, Tanjung Sub-district, Tabalong, then we tried it at Halong boarding school," she expounded.
In the first harvest here, edamame production reached 200 kg, because the land was not planted with other vegetables.
"In the second planting, besides edamame, the students also cultivated pokcay, so the production was not as it was in the first harvest," said Rina.
YABN and ULM had previously provided training to the students and the managers of the boarding school on cultavating edamame and making vegetable pesticides.
Vegetable pesticides, said Rina, uses various plants around, such as soursop leaves, lemongrass, betel leaves as well as tobacco leaves.
"We hope that edamame farming can continue to be developed as a boarding school business and to train students to become entrepreneurs," added Rina.
On another occasion, PT Adaro Energy's CSR Department Head Zuraida Murdia Hamdie said that Islamic boarding schools would continue to process, find the best business model and cultivation, the most appropriate to continue to be developed.
“One day the pesantren will not only have a strong business, but able to prepare their santri (students) to have entrepreneurship skills before they enter the society," Zuraida explained.
