Kotabaru, South Kalimantan (ANTARA) - The Kotabaru Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) is committed to strengthening village resilience to disaster threats through the implementation of Hebat (Hexahelix, educative, action, anticipatory, and responsive) strategy.
One way to do is by providing training to disaster-resilient village (Destana) team ini Sungup Kanan Village, Pulau Laut Tengah Sub-district.
Head of the Kotabaru BPBD Hendra Indrayana said the training not only prepares the team to respond to natural disasters, but also to help maintain the environmental preservation as part of ecosystem-based disaster mitigation.

“The Hebat strategy encourages cross-sectoral collaboration. We're not only focus on disaster management, but also on prevention through environmentally friendly behaviors in the community,” he said in Kotabaru, as reported on Monday.
The Environment Office team provided material on sustainable environmental management, household waste reduction, and the importance of maintaining ecosystem as a natural barrier against potential disasters.
The Sungup Kanan Destana not only received material, but went directly to the community to educate the importance of maintaining a clean environment and reducing disaster risks.

Residents were enthusiastic about participating in the program, especially when they were given concrete examples of how to apply environmentally friendly principles in the daily life.
This is expected to become a model for inter-agency collaboration in building resilient villages not only physically and socially prepared, but they posses a strong environmental awareness.
“Sungup Kanan Village now become a real model that the disaster resilience begins with environmental awareness,” said the BPBD head.
With synergy between agencies and active participation of community, the Kotabaru BPBD optimistic that the Hebat Strategy can strengthen preparedness and sustainability of community-based development throughout Kotabaru Regency.
