Banjarmasin, S Kalimatan (ANTARA) - A reserch team from the Banjarmasin State Polytechnic (Poliban) has installed a smart device for early detection of forest and land fires (karhutla) in Tanah Bumbu District, South Kalimantan.
Head of the Poliban Research Team Reza Fauzan here on Wednesday said that the device they created named Depisa Poliban (Poliban smoke and fire detection) has been installed in three locations.
He said the IoT-based smoke and fire detection system was installed in three strategic locations on PT Buana Karya Bakti plantation in Tanah Bumbu: Angsana, Sungai Cuka and Satui.
The three units of the device, he said, were successfully installed, two of which utilize PLN electricity and the other using solar panel system.
Each of the device equipped with serveillance camera, sensors, and network connectivity that enable the system to send real-time alert if any indication of smoke or fire is detected in the monitoring area.
The team during the intallation process on July 7-9, 2025 received assistance from the company IT Supervisor M. Nur Rahim, who also provided tecchnicla support and coordination in the field.
He said this activity was a follow up of a collaboration between Poliban, Minat Riset Saintek of the Higher Education, Science, and Technology Ministry (Kemendiktisaintek) and the Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education (LPDP) to develop appropriate technology for disaster mitigation.
The research team, which consisted of Poliban lecturers and technicians, were Reza Fauzan, Abdul Rozaq, Effan Najwaini, Agus Pebrianto, Rahimi Fitri, and Evi Widiastuti.
They designed and tested the device through a series of simulations and laboratory tests before finally implementing it in the field.
