Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan 18/4 (AntaranewsKalsel) - Directorate of Water Police (Ditpolair) South Kalimantan Regional Police assisted by National Police Security Maintenance Agency (Baharkam Mabes Polri) detained five fishing vessels for fishing in prohibited ways in the waters of South Kalimantan.
"The five ships we caught because of their ways of catching fish are illegal and prohibited by the government," said Director of Ditpolair Senior Commissioner Gatot Wahyudi in Banjarmasin on Tuesday.
He said the five fishing boats coming from Pekalongan, Central Java, were detained on Thursday (13/4) in the 50-mile area of the Barito River. Police also secured dozens of tons of fish from their catch.
These fishing vessels used banned tools ie cangrang or dragnet and were caught by officers around the waters of Tanjung Selatan, Tanah Laut District.
"In this case five captains of the vessels have been named as suspects and all detained for further legal proceedings," he said.
There are about 92 ships crews (ABK) from the five fishing vessels and a total fish catches of 45 tonnes.
"The fish will be auctioned, while the crew will be repatriated after the auction. The case is processed by law because the way they catch the fish is not in accordance with the rules and can damage the coral reefs," he said accompanied by Deputy of Law Enforcement (Kasubdit Gakkum) Ditpolair AKBP Afebrianto Widhi.
