Tanjung, South Kalimantan (AntaranewsKalsel) - A sambar deer (Cervus unicolor) conserved by PT Pertamina Exploration and Production Assets V Tanjung Field in Tabalong, South Kalimantan, gave birth to a female baby weighing four kilograms.
According to a Public Relations Staff of PT Pertamina EP Tanjung Devanty Puri Kencana this is the second time the sambar deer living in Pertamina's breeding bore.
"Previously, the first baby deer died during childbirth and the second born weighing less than four kilograms," said Devanty in Tanjung, Wednesday.
Sambar baby was given the name Olong taken from the name Tabalong, a region where the Kalimantan typical animal breeding.
Sambar baby's presence would increase the population of these animals in Kalimantan and is expected to be a means of education and recreation for residents of Tabalong.
Sambar itself is one kind of deer that have the biggest physical than other types. Sambar with brown skin can reach a maximum weight of up to 549 kilograms at the age of 25 years.
Sambar is one of the mammals with the main meal of grass, leaves, and forest fruits.
Sambar breeding in Pertamina Tanjung Complex built since 2013 in collaboration with Natural Resources Conservation Center (BKSDA) South Kalimantan chapter.
"Captive breeding program was intended to support the preservation of endangered species in Kalimantan," said Devanty.
