Kotabaru, South Kalimantan (AntaranewsKalsel) - The Kotabaru Naval Base (Lanal) held traditional boat rowing race to enliven the Fleet Day in 2015.
"47 participants from local fishermen take part in rowboat race," said Naval Base Commander Marine Lt. Col. Bagus Handoko in Kotabaru Monday.
He said, traditional boat rowing race held also as a venue for the development of water sports, as well as to preserve the cultural values of local wisdom in Kotabaru district.
The traditional boat rowing competition is expected to foster a sense of pride and ownership of the water sport that is now not much staged.
No less important, said commander, rowing boat race is also to find the seeds of the water sportsmen who can bring the good name of Kotabaru.
"In the future is expected to appear talented young athletes in aquatic sports particular rowing branch," he said.
Traditional boats used for the race is commonly called `balapan` by society Kotabaru. The wooden boat about 1.2 meters wide, 10 meters long is a daily boat used by fishermen to catch fish in the sea using a machine.
In order to be included in a rowing race, the engine mounted on the boat should be removed.
In the race, the boats filled with the rowing team consisted of seven people.
1st Place rowing race won by the Karya Muda team got the main prize of Yamaha Mio 125 motorcycle. Second winner Ar-Rahim team with prize money of Rp3 million, and Kenji team won 3rd place.
