Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo has appointed chief of the Ansor Youth Movement (GP Ansor), Yaqut Cholil Quomas, as the religious affairs minister, who will take over the post from Fachrul Razi.
Yaqut Cholil Quomas was present on the verandah of the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday evening when President Widodo announced six new ministers in his government.
"Mr. Yaqut Cholil Qoumas is a Muslim leader, chief of Ansor Youth Movement. We will assign responsibilities to him as religious affairs minister,” the President said.
Like the other new appointees, Quomas was dressed in a white shirt and blue jacket when the President announced and introduced the new ministers.
President Widodo and Vice President K.H. Ma'ruf Amin were also dressed in white shirts.
Born in Rembang, Central Java, on January 4, 1975, Quomas is the son of K.H. Muhammad Cholil Bisri, one of the founders of the Nation Awakening Party (PKB).
He is the brother of Yahya Staquf, who is a member of the Islamic organization, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU).
He graduated from the school of sociology at University of Indonesia (UI). (INE)
