Rantau, S Kalimantan (ANTARA) - The presence of Hiyung chili in the village of Hiyung, Tapin District, in the middle of Tapin Regency is truly a blessing for the village community.
Hiyung village secretary Junaidi in Rantau, said 85 percent out of a total of 423 family heads (KK), which covers 1556 inhibitants, earn their living from the Hiyung chili farm.
"In the past, Hiyung villagers worked as galam wood seekers and firewood sellers, earning Rp30 thousand to Rp50 thousand per day," he told.
But with the existence of Hiyung chili, villagers are able to get an income of Rp100 thousand to Rp150 thousand per day, that is for unskilled chili pickers labors.
"While the owner of Hiyung chili land, can earn more than Rp7 million per month," he said.
The Hiyung chili, which became globally known for its spiciness, has been registered as a local variety plant in the Agriculture Ministry with a number of No. 09/PLV/2012 dated 12 April 2012.
By the registration of Hiyung chili variety, now it becomes the Tapin District Government cultivate and develop it to be kept maintained and not to be lost.
"We expect the presence of Hiyung chili is truly increases the local people's economy," Regent of Tapin HM Arifin Arpan said when he was interviewed by journalists some time ago.
