The South Kalimantan provincial government is planning a pumping program to extend agricultural land to thousands of hectares as an effort to maintain local food security.
 
Head of South Kalimantan Office of Plantation and Livestock Suparmi here on Sunday said based on the latest data the area added to planting using pumping method has reached 7,313.50 hectares.

"Pumping program aims to maintain agricultural production during dry season as stable as in the rainy season," she said.

This program, which is to optimize agricultural land, has abig influence on productivity.

In addition to pumping, the provincial government also optimizing land by intercropping method. "It covers an area of 106,20 hectares," she said.

Some of the South Kalimantan provincial government's efforts to optimize agricultural land was discussed at a virtual coordination meeting on expanding planting area and signing a MoU organized by the Ministry of Agriculture on June 7, 2024.

At the meeting, Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman again provided assistance in optimizing land and expending planting area by 16,000 hectares for South Kalimantan.
 
The assistance, Suparmi said, received by farmers in the Tanah Laut District.
 
The provincial government of South Kalimantan is now working to increase its agricultural productivity as a food buffer for the new capital city of Nusantara in neighboring province, East Kalimantan.
