The international energy company Mubadala Energy together with the Kotabaru Environment Agency (DLH), South Kalimantan, planted 10,000 mangrove seedlings in the coastal area of Tanjung Pangga Village, Kelumpang Selatan Sub-district.

"The planting is to commemorate World Environment Day 2024 and in line with environment conservation program carries out by Mubadala Energy in Kotabaru coastal areas," said Senior Manager HSSE & AI of Mubadala Energy Widi Hernowo here on Wednesday.

The program is not only conducted by planting action in coastal areas, but also at Mamake Hill attraction with a different variant.

"Especially for conservation program at Mamake Hill, it is also to conserve the Kalimantan's wealth of biodiversity," he said.

Head of Kotabaru DLH Maulidiansyah said that climate crisis is an environmental issue that is currently being widely discussed, because it is experienced by almost all people in the world.

An increase in earth temperature due to greenhouse gas effect, the use of fossil fuel, and lack wise use of natural resources are the triggers of global warming.

The consequences that we are now experiencing, among others, severe drough, water scarcity, severe fires, rising sea level, floods, melting polar ice, devastating storm and the decline in biodiversity.

"We as the next generation are obliged to take part in protecting, improving and preserving the environment. One of the efforts we can make is to preserve coastal ecosystem," said Maulidiansyah.

He emphasized the importance of coastal ecosystem, especially mangrove as  buffer, because they can reduce the rising of seawater, minimize the risk of flooding, able to absorb 5 times better than tropical rainforest and to store 1/3 of coastal carbon stocks globally.

"78 percent of the Kotabaru is a coastal area. This is the background of the emergence of the Mangrove for Banua program," he said.
