The provincial government of South Kalimantan is readying as many as 270,000 mangrove seeds in a program to rehabilitate coastal areas and small islands in three districts.
Head of South Kalimantan Maritime and Fisheries Agency Rusdi Hartono here on Tuesday (June 4, 2024) said this is one of the Governor's priority program to improve environmental ecosystem, especially in coastal areas in Tanah Laut, Tanah Bumbu, and Kotabaru regencies.
“Mangrove plants are beneficial for the lives of people living in coastal areas. It also preventing abrasion and helps the breeding process of marine fish and crabs,” he said.
“Mangrove growth on the coast also has an impact on fishermen's catches,” he said.
The thousand hundreds of mangrove seeds being prepared consist of two types, Avicennia and Rhizophora Mucronata.
To procure the seeds, the agency collaborates with the local mangrove breeders thereby helping the community's economy.
In addition, the provincial government provides education to coastal comunities not to uproot or damage mangrove trees after the panting later.
“We alwayas provide outreach to coastal communities to preserve teh surrounding environment,” said Rusdi.
