Fish farmers in Kotabaru District, South Kalimantan, have suffered losses of hundreds of millions because their shrimps and fish in the pond were out freely due to rob flood.

Deputy Chairman of Kotabaru DPRD HM Mukni AF here on Wednesday said that the fish and shrimp ponds that were hit by the seawater high tide were quite extensive that caused aquaculture to suffer considerable losses.

"(The ponds) have submerged due to rob flood along the coast of the southern, eastern, western, and northern part of Pulau Laut (Laut Island) Kotabaru," he pointed out.

The submerged ponds had actually been filled with milkfish, vaname shrimp, and other types of fish.

The tidal flood as high as one meter due to the rising sea level had caused the water level of the pond to rise. Fish and shrimp in the ponds were freely out.

Acting Head of Kotabaru Fisheries Agency Johannor confirmed that rob flood in Kotabaru had caused the ponds to overflow.

"We are still conducting an inventory of the area of ponds affected by rob flood and farmers' losses," he said.
