The District Secretary of Tanah Laut H Dahnial Kifli said that the youth's lack of interest in agriculture has become a concern of the government, especially the Ministry of Agriculture.

"The Ministry always tries to regenerate farmers, one of which is through the Youth Entrepreneur and Employment Support Service (YESS) program that seeks to create young entrepreneurs in agriculture," said H Dahnial Kifli in the District Multi Stakeholders Forum held by the Provincial Project Implementation Unit (PPIU) of South Kalimantan in Pelaihari, Thursday (Mar 18, 2021).

YESS, he said, is an international program supported by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).

In Indonesia, the YESS program is held in four provinces, one of which is South Kalimantan (Kalsel).

"Three districts and cities in South Kalimantan are predicted to become pilot projects, namely Tanah Bumbu, Banjarbaru, and Tanah Laut," he said.

Youth, especially in Kabupaten Tanah Laut, he said, must be able to change their mindset, not to be ashamed of being farmers and have to care about agriculture.

Youth, he said again, are expected to become strong and independent millennial farmers.

Dahnial highly appreciates YESS program and the Tanah Laut government always facilitates youth to become farmers not the conventional ones, but modern farmers who can develop agriculture to become agro-tourism with added value.

"Young farmers must be clear what commodities they want to develop, and they should be directed toward commodities suitable for Tanah Laut," Dahnial said.

Meanwhile,  Deputy Manager of PPIU South Kalimantan Airin Nurmalita acknowledged that the agriculture sector is less attractive to young workers.

In fact, she said, entrepreneurship in the agriculture sector, both on-farm and off-farm, is actually very wide open.

"This kind of business is not only on-farm but can involve other sectors, such as tourism in agro-tourism that can take advantage of agriculture sector on a large scale," she pointed out.

The event was attended by representatives of related government working units, President Director of BPR Tanah Laut, representative of Bank Kalsel, representative of the Center of Superior Animal Breeding and Forage (BPTU-HPT) Tanah Laut, representatives of Indonesian Young Entrepreneurs Association (HIMPI), Principal of the state agriculture high vocational school SMK PP Negeri Tanah Laut, and invited guests.
