Banjarmasin, S Kalimantan (ANTARA) - The city government of Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan, is continuing to reforest the former garbage mound as part of its effort to improve the Basirih final waste processing site (TPAS) in South Banjarmasin.

The City Mayor H Muhammad Yamin HR here on Tuesday said tree plantings have been carried out right on the former garbage dump, including with tree seedlings donated by the community.

"The trees we planted were birthday gifts from colleagues and local government agencies sometime ago," he said.

He explained that since the Basirih landfill was sanctioned to close by the Environment Ministry in February 2025, the waste mound there have been filled with red soil.

The final zone covered with red soil was in April 2026, followed by planting to transform the former landfill into useful green space.

"On February 6, we implemented the mandate of Law 2008 on waste management. We no longer use open dumping system," Yamin pointed out.

Basirih landfill management has followed the directives and regulations of Law 2008 came into effect in 2013, applying controlled landfill or sanitary landfill system. Drone is used to monitor current condition as well as inspection.

He expects Basirih landfill in the future will become a green space. Considering it location on the highest plateau in the city, it offers potential for development as green area.

“If we talk about high plateau in Banjarmasin, it's here. (Former) Basirih landfill is like hill. We hope it can be useful for its vast area,” he said.
