"The Aquabike Indonesia Championship, or AIC, will be held together with the F1Powerboat at the same place," state tourism holding company InJourney's director of marketing and tourism programs, Maya Watono, said here on Tuesday.
The AIC has been organized by the Indonesian Motor Association (IMI) to train local jetski athletes and boost their skills. The AIC will have two categories of races, namely "endurance" and "parallel slalom," which will be contested by at least 20 national racers.
Athletes are expected to use the competition as an opportunity to improve their performance and prepare for competing in international championships.
"The F1 Powerboat will present a phenomenal world-class water sports competition with the beautiful Lake Toba as the background. Visitors can also watch various cultural festivals," Watono said.
She added that several local micro, small, and medium enterprise players and top brand merchants will attend the event, where famous bands are also slated to play.
In addition to the F1 Powerboat and the AIC, a traditional racing competition called the Bataknese Solu Bolon or the dragon boat race will also take place at Lake Toba.
Winners of the race, which is being held to preserve local wisdom and tradition, will get a total prize money of Rp250 million (around US$16 thousand).
The local racing contest will span two days, with the final race taking place on the second day. Locals from surrounding areas are expected to attend the event.
InJourney expressed the hope that the international-scale sports activities and supporting cultural activities, such as music concerts, cultural festivals, and MSME exhibitions, will help increase tourism in Lake Toba.
