Speaker of the Kotabaru, South Kalimantan, Legislative Council (DPRD) Suwanti is pushing the Pulau Laut Timur Sub-district to become a rice paddy center.

Suwanti made his remarks when attending rice harvest festival in Langkang Baru Village, Pulau Laut Timur Sub-district, a few days ago.

"We are encouraging related agencies to increase utilization of rice fields in several areas in Pulau Laut Timur," she said in Kotabaru, Tuesday.

The speaker said that the harvest festival with the Agriculture Agency at the field managed by Padat Karya Tunai Desa (PKTD) or village Cash for Labor Intensive of the Langkang Baru Village was part of local government's effort to prepare for food self-sufficiency.

On that occasion, Suwanti participated in handing over a combine harvester assistance from the Ministry of Agriculture through the Food Security and Agriculture Office (DKPP) to the Gapoktan (farmers group) of the Langkang Baru Village.

"We hope this equipment to be beneficial and encourage farmers to optimally manage their rice fields and produce abundant rice," said Suwanti.

Meeting the need for agricultural support to increase rice productivity is essential to support President Prabowo Subianto's goal of achieving food self-sufficiency.

Suwanti hopes that Pulau Laut Timur Sub-district or better known as "Rancah Maurai" will become rice granary for the district.
