Indonesia continues to strengthen its early warning system due to its high vulnerability to earthquakes.

In a webinar discussion, titled "Megathrust Earthquake Potential: Danger Identification, Potential Losses, and Mitigation Measures," here on Friday, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said it has developed an advanced system to monitor seismic activities that can provide early warning information.

"BMKG has built an end-to-end system that monitors and detects earthquakes," Septa Anggraini, a member of BMKG's Earthquake and Tsunami Mitigation Dissemination Team, remarked.

The end-to-end system built by BMKG can process seismograph data in real-time and convert it into easy-to-understand information. This information is then disseminated to the government and the community so that mitigation actions can be taken quickly.

"This system processes seismograph data into information that will be conveyed to the government so that appropriate actions can be immediately taken to protect the community," she explained.

Anggraini stressed that this advanced technology is crucial, considering the potential for megathrust earthquakes in Indonesia.

Indonesia has several subduction zones that stretch from Sumatra to Papua.

Anggraini highlighted that the increasingly sophisticated earthquake monitoring system is expected to minimize the damages caused by earthquakes. She noted that accurate early warning would give people the time to evacuate to safer places.

Indonesia's state-owned reinsurer company, Indonesia Re, the webinar's organizer, also emphasized the importance of collaboration between various parties in the efforts to mitigate earthquake threats.

In addition to the BMKG, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) plays an active role in conducting disaster risk mapping and developing mitigation strategies.

Meanwhile, Indonesia Re, as a reinsurance company, has a role in managing financial risks in case of natural disasters.
