Sasirangan cloth is offiacially registered as Geographical Indication belonging to South Kalimantan after the GI certificate of Sasirangan handed over by Expert Staff of the Minister of Law and Human Rights for Economy Lucky Agung in Banjarmasin.

"The certificate was received by Regional Secretary of the Province Roy Rizali Anwar representing South Kalimantan Governor Sahbirin Noor," said Head of South Kalimantan Office of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights (Kemenkumham) Taufiqurrakhman here on Monday.

Sasirangan fabric became Geographical Indication with South Kalimantan Sasirangan Community Association as the owner after being submitted on February 6, 2024 and registered as Intellectual Property (KI) Right on June 7, 2024.

Sasirangan comes from Banjar language "sirang" which means to stitch together or sewing technique using hands.

Sasirangan became the South Kalimantan's second Geographical Indications after Hiyung bird's eye chili in Tapin. It obtained the certificate and obtains benefits in legal and economic perspective.

Taufiqurrakhman emphasized the importance of joint commitment to support 2024 as the Year of Geographical Indications.  GI is a distinctive sign used to identify a product whose quality, reputation or other such characteristics relate to its geographical origin.

“We hope that all elements of the intellectual property ecosystem can make KI, one of which is Geographical Indications as a driving force for the economy in the region,” he said.

Regional Secretary Roy said that the registered of Sasirangan is a shared momentum to further expand the market of sasirangan in the eyes of the world, which will have an absolute benefits for craftmen, entrepreneurs, and MSMEs.

He hopes that other Geographical Indications will soon be registered considering the enermous potential of South Kalimantan, such as Loksado cinnamon, Siam Unus and Mutiara rice, Kotabaru palm sugar, and Alabio ducks.

"Intellectual property protection can optimally support community economic growth and regional development," he said.
