A magnitude 3.3 earthquake has rattled the district of Kotabaru, Thursday morning, around 10.28 a.m., the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported. 

It was centered on the land about 68 kilometers southeast of Tanah Bumbu at a depth of 6 kilometers, Head of the Geophysics Station of the Balikpapan BMKG Rasmid noted in a statement received in Banjarmasin, Thursday.

“Seeing the location of episenter and the depth of hypocenter, the quake that occurred was a shallow type caused by local faults activity,” he said.

Based on community report, he said, the quake was felt in Kotabaru with an intensity of II-III MMI or the vibration were felt in the house as if a truck was passing by.

“The modeling results show that this shallow quake does not have the potential for a tsunami,” he said.

So far, he admitted, there has been nor report from the public about any damage that caused by the quake.

However, appealed to the people in Kotabaru and Tanah Bumbu District to remain calm and and not to be influenced by issues or information that cannot be justified.

Rasmid asked the public to avoid buildings that are cracked or damaged due to the quake. Check and make sure that the building, especially house, is resistant enough to the quake.
