The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that Tapin District has again rattled by 2.9 magnitude earthquake, Monday night around 19.30 p.m.

Head of the Geophysics Station of the Balikpapan BMKG Rasmid informed that the center of quake was about 28 kilometers southeast of Tapin at a depth of about 10 kilometers.

“Seeing the location of episenter and the depth of hypocenter, the quake that occurred was a shallow type caused by Meratus faults activity in south Kalimantan,” he noted in a written statement received here.

Previously, a 3.2 magnitude quake hit Tapin Regency on Sunday, February 18, 2024 at 12.32 p.m.

Based on community report, he said, the quake was felt in the villages of Salam Bebaris, Kalumpang, Hangui, Rantau Bujur, Paringguling, Kalumpang sub-district, and Bungur Sub-district.

“The quake was felt with an intensity of II-III MMI or the vicration were felt in the house as if a truck was passing by. The quake has no potential for tsunami,” he said.

Rasmid appealed to the people in Tapin District to remain calm and and not to be influenced by issues or information that cannot be justified.

So far, he said, there was no report of damages and casualties caused by the quake.

Rasmid asked the public to avoid buildings that are cracked or damaged due to the quake. Check and make sure that the building, especially house, is resistant enough to the quake.
