Barabai, South Kalimantan (AntaranewsKalsel) - Central Hulu Sungai (HST) District Government will continue to protect and preserve the diversity of flora and fauna in Meratus with no exploitation.


Head of HST Environmental Management Agency (BPLH) Akhmad Tamzil here on Tuesday said the protective measures have been disseminated to all relevant agencies in the HST.

"We have held a Meratus Protected Forest Conservation exposure on Thursday (9/4) to synchronize perception and policy with related agencies," he said.

Meratus area is a protected forest area in accordance with the decision of the Minister of Forestry number 2828/Kpts-II/2002, he said.

Tamzil explained, although Meratus stretches across several districts in South Kalimantan, namely Banjar, Tapin, HSS, HST, Balangan, Tanah Laut, and Tanah Bumbu, however, HST is committed not to open mining activity in the region.

"Empirical experience the area, even without the exploitation of mines, HST's economic growth at constant prices in 2010 amounted to 4.75 percent increased to 6.16 percent in 2013," he said.

In addition, the number of poor based on BPS in 2010 amounted to 6.32 percent down to 5.57 percent in 2013, while agricultural production increased, HDI, and other increases.

Meanwhile, Secretary of the Agriculture Agency HM Nurdin suggested that rare plants such as orchids, tree resin, bamboo and others that do not damage the environment can be cultivated. "It aims to make the green Barabai according to the` Green Belt of Borneo, "he added.

Head of Forestry Syaiful Bahri also added, protected forest area of about 45,520 hectares in the HST. So the people who live around the forest area nurtured in order to maintain and care for protected areas and not to do illegal logging.
