Chair of the South Kalimantan Hydroponic, Organic, Food Crops, and Horticulture Farmers Association (Aphothik) Wahdiah said that the prospect of hydroponic plants, especially vegetables, is very promising as a business to support the family income.
"So, it is not wrong to fill our time by utilizing yard or empty land with hydroponic plants, such as vegetables," she said in Banjarbaru (35 kilometers from Banjarmasin) through WhatsApp to Antaranews Kalsel, Tuesday night.
Regarding market share, the alumnus of Agriculture Faculty of the Lambung Mangkurat University Banjarmasin said it is wide open. "The market share for hydroponic plants, such as vegetable is still wide open," she said.
"Especially with the proliferation of fast-food business such as kebabs, spring rolls, and others, the average hydroponic cultivators already have their own customers, and there are certain times when they are flooded with orders," she said.
In fact, their supply and stock are not sufficient, so they supply each other to help meet consumer demand, added Wahdiah who is also a civil servant (PNS).

Regarding constraints, she acknowledged, so far what the hydroponic farmers have experienced is the attack of pests or diseases on vegetable plants, generally mustard green/pack Choi and lettuce.
"Mustard green is usually attacked by plutella worms (Plutella xylostella L.), which are known to be greedy for eating leaves, so in a short time, they can destroy the expanse of mustard plants in the hydroponic installations. While lettuce is often attacked by fungi," she said.
According to her, this urban farming by utilizing narrow yards, both on a household and business scale, can grow larger, thus it needs protection by the government.
She explained that the Association of Hydrophonic, Organic, Food Crops and Horticulture Farmers (Aphothik) has just been formed in August 2020. It is still improving the administration for membership and waiting for approval from the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, through a notary.
"The background of forming the organization is to make it easier to provide guidance and counseling to hydroponic farmers, and because it is a legal entity so its existence is recognized," said Wahdiah.
