Banjarbaru, S Kalimantan, Feb 25 (AntaranewsKalsel) - Social Affairs Minister, Khofifah Indar Parawansa stated that community-based rehabilitation (RBM) was one of the mechanisms to fight drugs abuse, use of psychotropics, and other addictive substances.
"The RBM is one of the effective ways to fight drugs abuse, use of psychotropic, and other addictive substances," the minister said here on Saturday.
Khofifah made the remarks after inaugurating the education and social welfare training center regional IV of Kalimantan in the region.
According to her, drug abuse has become an alarming and frightening issue in Indonesia, particularly after the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) released data on the turnover of the narcotics trade.
"In 2016, the turnover of the narcotics trade reached Rp72 trillion with the number of victims totaling 5.8 million. This is a terrible fact which terrorizes the people," she explained.
The minister added that the RBM plays an important role in accelerating and expanding the social rehabilitation of the drug abusers as a movement of collective prevention.
"The movement is jointly carried out by families, communities, governments, and the private sector to build a community-based social rehabilitation movement at all levels," she revealed.
The essence of RBM is to use wisdom, expertise, and leadership of local communities by involving social organizations, community leaders, and religious figures.
Social rehabilitation is the process of integrated activities covering physical, mental, and social recovery of the victims of drugs abuse, in order to perform their social functions.
The minister also appreciated the people who voluntarily established the institution of Social Rehabilitation Victims of Drugs and provide services for the drug victims.
