Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's state energy firm PT Pertamina signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC) to intensify cooperative relations in conducting energy transition and maintaining energy security between Indonesia and Japan.
President Director of Pertamina Nicke Widyawati stated in a statement received here, Monday, that the cooperation should be implemented by Indonesia and several Japanese companies that are implementing upstream oil and gas development projects to face the energy transition era.
Moreover, Indonesia has vast potential in underground CO2 storage and the production of clean fuels, such as hydrogen and ammonia.
The signing of the MoU was conducted by Nicke Widyawati and Chairman & CEO of JOGMEC Takahara Ichiro and witnessed by Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) of Indonesia Arifin Tasrif and Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry of Japan Nishimura Yasutoshi at the side event of the G7 Ministerial Meeting on Climate, Energy, and Environment in Sapporo, Japan, Friday (Apr 14).
Furthermore, the MoU will be deepened with a joint study agreement (JSA) for the implementation of Carbon Capture Utilization & Storage (Huff & Puff) in the Sukowati field belonging to Pertamina EP Cepu (PEPC).
The agreement for continuation of this collaboration is planned to be signed in Indonesia in July 2023 and will continue to be strengthened by the signing of the second JSA in 2024.
"This collaboration will strengthen Pertamina's steps in overcoming climate change, reducing carbon emissions, and carrying out energy transition as well as maintaining national energy security," Widyawati affirmed.
Pertamina stated that JOGMEC is also committed to increasing Japan's energy security and contribution to sustainable economic development and carbon neutrality in the Asian region, including Indonesia.
This is based on the concept of the Asian Zero Emission Community (AZEC) and the Asian Energy Transition Initiative (AETI), both of which are led by the Government of Japan.
In addition, JOGMEC is committed to contributing to increasing Japan's energy security and realizing sustainable economic development and carbon neutrality in Indonesia and other Asian countries.
Earlier, Pertamina, through its subsidiary PT Pertamina EP and JOGMEC, had collaborated on a joint study of CO2 injection at the Jatibarang Field in West Java since August 2022.
Both parties have successfully implemented CO2 Huff and Puff to demonstrate and verify the effects of CO2 EOR and associated underground storage of CO2 in oil and gas fields that have experienced a decline in production.
With the historical experience applied by JOGMEC and PT Pertamina EP, Pertamina strengthens cooperation on a wider scope through the signing of an MoU that will provide increased studies on the implementation of CO2 studies effectively.
The MoU agreement was made to review and promote projects related to utilizing CO2 to increase oil and gas production through the Enhanced Oil/Gas Recovery (EOR/EGR) technology.
Other opportunities for cooperation are also carried out in the production of hydrogen and ammonia by carbon capture & storage as well as CO2 capture and storage by the industrial sector, such as power plants, steel, and cement factories that are included in the CCS Hub and Cluster Industry.
This cooperation is also aimed at Japanese companies under the auspices of JOGMEC.
