Amuntai, South Kalimantan (AntaranewsKalsel) - Genetic purity of the Alabio duck, a breed of domestic duck from North Hulu Sungai (HSU), South Kalimantan, became polluted due to interbreeding with ducks from other areas.
Livestock Business Section Head Syafrudin Hasby in Amuntai on Wednesday said, many farmers started interbred to produce the kind of poultry meat bigger and egg production larger.
The HSU Fisheries and Livestock Agency (Diskannak) saw the result of cross breeding poultry of Alabio ducks have been traded in Alabio market and nursery centers Mamar Village.
"We found that approximately 50 percent Alabio ducks traded are the result of interbreeding with other types of duck," said Syarifudin.
He said, most breeders crossed marriage between Alabio ducks and the types of Peking ducks and Mojosari ducks.
The reason to intered with Peking duck is to produce a more bigger poulytry. While interbreed with Mojosari ducks in order to have a larger production of egg.
Unwittingly breeders, said Syfruddin, interbreed activities will destroy the genetic purity of Alabio ducks which is native germplasm or poultry of HSU.
"It is feared that more and more interbreeding resulted in pure Alabio ducks population dwindling and threatened to disappear," said Syafrudin.
He explains, HSU Local Government tries to maintain the purity of the Alabio ducks with the Decree of the Minister of Agriculture number 2921 year 2011, regarding the determination Alabio as the type of poultry to be preserved.
Decree of the Minister of Agriculture No 4436 in 2013 and then set the HSU district as seed sources of Alabio duck region, including Sub-district of South Amuntai and Sungai Pandan.
