Jakarta, (Antaranews Kalsel) - The medical team of Ulin General Hospital (RSUD) Banjarmasin have created an alternative breathing apparatus to reduce the infant mortality rate due to respiratory illness.

Prof Dr Ari Yunanto Spa, innovator of the tool discovery, in Jakarta onWednesday said there are three main causes of death in infants, namely respiratory distress, infection, low birth weight or premature.

Of these three issues, he added, respiratory distress is the dominant case of the leading cause of infant death.

"Respiratory distress is one of the largest contributors to infant mortality, while breathing apparatus that can provide continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) are very limited in hospitals or community health centers (puskesmas) in South Kalimantan," he said.

Based on the situation, he added, finally invented an alternative breathing apparatus, which is expected to suppress infant mortality rate in South Kalimantan.

The invention by the medical team of RSUD Ulin Banjarmasin is included in the List of Top 99 Public Service Innovations in 2018 held by Ministry of Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform Ministry (MenPAN-RB).

According to Ari, alternative breathing apparatus for babies commonly known as Babies Respiratory Distress Recovery Device (BIRD) is quite expensive, ie Rp91, 7 million. That is why hospitals in districts and municipalities as well as puskesmas lack of this tool.
