Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan (AntaranewsKalsel) - Head of the Banjarmasin Market Management Hermansyah said three traditional markets here designated to promote the campaign without plastic bags.


The three markets as an example of healthy market without providing free plastic bags for their shoppers are Telawang, Teluk Dalam, and Pandu Market.

"At first we want to select Kalindo market, but it's a private. It's hard later on, so we replace it with Pandu market," he said Sunday.

Currently, he said, the socialization of the program to reduce waste of plastic bags at three designated market continues to be done, in addition to verbally as well as through flyers.

"So we are still discussing how the realization later. Perhaps initially we will provide biodegradable bags for traders and buyers out there," he said.

According to Hermansyah, these three markets will be an example to approximately 50 other traditional markets in the capital of the province. They will no longer provide free plastic bags, even does not provide at all.

"We ask the buyers bring their own containers when shopping to the market. No more disposable plastic bags that become litter threatens the preservation of the earth, because it is difficult to be destroyed," he explained.

Head of the Banjarmasin Environmental Agency (BLHD) Hamdi said the program to promotes traditional markets to reduce waste of plastic bags has been agreed will be realized in 2017.

As we have already applied today in retailers, where there is no free plastic bags, to familiarize shoppers bring their own containers to shop.

"We have even asked the public if going to market bring "bakul" (Banjar typical bag of woven ) to reduce plastic waste that nearly 70 percent of the garbage dominate in this area," he explained.
